Leather Upholstery Facts

  • The size of your family, usage (high or low traffic area), and decorating needs all factor in to the purchase of your leather upholstery.  Remember, salesmen sell they do not clean or maintain leather upholstery.  Please give our office a call at 317-773-9615 to discuss your leather upholstery needs before you make a purchase/investment of this magnitude.
  • Leather upholstery can dry out by just sitting in a room and never being used.  This is why it is important to clean, condition, and protect the leather every 6-12 months.
  • Body oils and soil break down finishes on protected leather and absorb deep into aniline and nubuck(nubuk) leathers, which may lead to permanent staining.
  • By just conditioning a piece of leather upholstery does not remove body oils or soil without proper cleaning first.  This makes it more difficult for any conditioner to penetrate and absorb into the pores of the leather and also creates a gummy build up over time (see Our Work).  Just imagine continually putting lotion on your hands but never washing them.
  • Using improper cleaning chemicals (too high or too low ph) or improper spot cleaning can result in permanently damaged leather upholstery.  35% of leather upholstery is irreversibly damaged within the first two years by improper maintenance and cleaning.
  • Leather has very tight and strong fibers, making it one of the oldest and most durable materials on the market today.
  • Leather, properly maintained, will last 4-5 times longer than fabric or man-made fiber.
  • Leather furniture subjected to normal soiling should be cleaned every 6-12 months.  This will help retain the color and will assist in resisting cracking and peeling.
  • Leather has a calming influence in interior design and as leather is used it becomes softer to the touch.
  • Place your leather upholstery away from sunlight.  Ultraviolet rays will quickly cause deterioration and significantly shorten the life span.
  • Leather furniture is an investment, and like any investment it pays to provide proper care to keep it looking beautiful, and help it last as long as intended.
  • Nicotine and smoke will rapidly age your leather upholstery, more frequent cleaning will be necessary if your furniture is subject to smoking environments.
  • Regular cleaning and replenishment of natural oils will keep the leather and its finish in good condition for a very long time.
  • Avoid using cleaning wipes, shoe cream, saddle soap, or mink oil.  These products contain ingredients that will damage the integrity of the leather.
  • Remember, if you are not using a 3-step process to clean your leather upholstery, you may be diminishing the life, color, and integrity of one of your most valuable investments.
